"The Walking Dead": Laurie Holden

Hai letto il comic book di Robert Kirkman da cui è tratta la serie? Se lo hai letto ti è stato utile per calarti nei panni di Andrea?

Prima di approdare al ruolo di Andrea nella serie TV "The Walking dead" non conoscevo il fumetto. Comunque, non appena avuta la parte, ho preso in mano il Compendium One e l'ho letto dall'inizio alla fine. Mi ha decisamente sorpreso. Sono stata catturata dall'incredibile narrazione di Robert Kirkman e da tutti quegli stupendi personaggi, così diversi e complessi.
Leggerlo mi è stato molto utile per calarmi nel ruolo di Andrea, ma mi sono assicurata di non andare troppo in là con la lettura per non farmi coinvolgere troppo.   

Quali sono per te i tratti fondamentali di Andrea? Quali quelli su cui ti sei concentrata maggiormente per interpretarla al meglio?

Andrea, prima dell'apocalisse zombie, era un avvocato per i diritti civili. Ha dedicato la sua vita a difendere, proteggere e ristabilire i diritti degli altri. Per me è questa la chiave di volta della sua essenza. In questo nuovo mondo caotico ovviamente non ci sono aule, ma lei continua a combattere contro le ingiustizie. Ha un forte senso della morale e la appassiona aiutare gli altri. È una leader nata... una sopravvissuta, e una buona persona.

Non è la prima volta che lavori sotto la direzione di Frank Darabont. Avendo lavorato con lui sia in due lungometraggi sia in un serial televisivo quali pensi che siano, se ce ne sono, sono le differenze tra il Darabont regista cinematografico e il Darabont regista di serial per la tv?

Questa è la mia terza collaborazione con Frank Darabont. In precedenza mi ha diretto in due film: "The Majestic" e "The Mist"... due esperienze estremamente soddisfacenti e positive. Questa esperienza non è stata differente, dal momento che è un autore che presta grande attenzione al dettaglio e onora la storia al di sopra di tutto. Lavorare a "The Walking Dead" (benché sia un prodotto per la televisione) è stato come girare un lungometraggio, poiché il valore della produzione era eccellente, la sceneggiatura sensazionale e il cast e la crew erano di prima qualità... e con Mr. Darabont al timone eravamo in grado di rendere il nostro lavoro qualcosa di innovativo, anche da un punto di vista creativo. Mi sento davvero molto fortunata di far parte di questo show.

Ancora una volta ti sei trovata a lavorare a fianco di Jeffrey DeMunn, che in "The Walking Dead" interpreta Dale. Com'è stato ritrovarsi sul set della serie?

Avevo già lavorato con Jeff DeMunn due volte prima, rispettivamente in "The Majestic" e in "The Mist". È uno dei migliori attori tra quelli con cui ho avuto il piacere di lavorare ed è sicuramente uno dei migliori uomini che io abbia conosciuto. Adoro lavorare con Jeff!

Pensi che l'aver già lavorato con lui sia stato un incentivo per il regista a scegliere voi due per le rispettive parti (anche alla luce del rapporto sempre più stretto che lega Andrea e Dale nella storia originale)?

Alcuni degli attori ci prendono in giro dicendo che siamo parte della "troupe di attori di Frank Darabont". Questo perché ha la tendenza ad ingaggiare di continuo gli stessi attori. Se guardate i suoi film vedrete spesso molti volti familiari. Jeff DeMunn ha partecipato ad ogni singola produzione che Frank Darabont abbia mai diretto... e Melissa McBride (che interpreta Carol nello show) era anche lei in "The Mist".
Gli piace anche lavorare con la stessa crew... e molte persone sul set sono suoi vecchi compagni di scuola.
Sono davvero grata di essere parte di un così formidabile gruppo di artisti... e quando cammino sul set per uno dei suoi progetti mi sento a casa... c'è una vera atmosfera famigliare.
Dal momento in cui The Walking Dead ebbe il semaforo verde sapevo che aveva me in mente per il ruolo di Andrea e Jeff per quello di Dale. Questo perché ha lavorato con noi in precedenza e perché ci conosce entrambi bene, la chimica era da cartolina.

"X-Files" è un serial entrato nel cuore dei fans, pensi che anche "The Walking Dead" lo farà? E se sì, perché?

Credo che "The Walking Dead" attirerà gli spettatori grazie ai personaggi: sono così complessi, ricchi, differenti e approfonditi. Eravamo impegnati a raccontare le storie più drammaticamente reali e autentiche. È oscuro, è spaventoso, a volte ispirante... e, allo stesso tempo, anche selvaggiamente divertente. Gli spettatori si troveranno davanti una vera esperienza, credo che la ameranno.

Mary Travis, Marita Covarrubias, Cybil Bennet, Olivia Murray sono tutti personaggi dalla forte personalità e determinazione, a cui possiamo aggiungere ora il personaggio di Andrea. Cosa rende, sul piano interpretativo, questi personaggi diversi tra loro? A quale di questi ti senti maggiormente legata? Come ti trovi ad interpretare questi ruoli di donna, se così si può dire, dura a morire? Sono ruoli che in qualche modo rispettano la tua indole?

Non so se mi sento di classificare questi ruoli che ho interpretato come donne dure a morire, così come forti e determinate. Prendete Mary Travis, per esempio. Era una donna di frontiera, una sopravvissuta. Combatteva per dare una vita a se e al figlio nel Vecchio West dopo la morte del marito. Quello che era intrigante era il suo essere una donna fatta da sé... una donna editrice in un'era in cui le donne non erano ancora totalmente affrancate.
Marita Covarrubias, allo stesso modo, era una donna a cui era stata data una tremenda responsabilità in un mondo "governativo" dominato dagli uomini. Come Agente Speciale alle Nazioni Unite, il futuro del mondo gravava spesso sulle sue spalle (per le decisioni che doveva prendere e i segreti che doveva custodire). Ho amato interpretare un personaggio così misterioso e così esposto al rischio.
Anche Olivia Murray era un personaggio che mi sono divertita a interpretare perché, di nuovo, era una donna (un agente I.C.E ) nel mondo dei cartelli della droga, in cui cane mangia cane. È autoritaria e non fa prigionieri... ma ha anche un punto debole, cosa che la rende un personaggio interessante da interpretare.
Cybil Bennet era una vera icona. Quante volte hai la possibilità di interpretare l'eroe di un videogioco? È stato una bomba.
Andrea è diversa da tutti questi personaggi nel suo essere semplicemente una ragazza che cerca di rendersi conto delle cose. Quando accade questa apocalisse, tutto quello che le importa è restare uniti e proteggere la propria famiglia. Non è un supereroe, un guerriero, o un qualsiasi tipo di persona autoritaria... per niente. Tutte le abilità di leadership emergono col tempo, con l'evolvere del personaggio, attraverso il corso della serie. Andrea ha un percorso stupefacente.

"I Magnifici Sette" è durato 2 stagioni, "X-Files" è durato 9 stagioni, "The Shield 7"... quanto durerà "The Walking Dead"?

Spero che "The Walking Dead" duri per sempre.

Emma Bell interpreta Amy, tua sorella. Quanto deve essere protettiva una sorella maggiore in un mondo popolato da morti viventi? Ci parli del vostro rapporto dentro e fuori dal set?

Sono stata davvero fortunata il giorno che Emma Bell è stata ingaggiata per il ruolo di Amy. Abbiamo legato parecchio nel corso delle riprese e ora siamo perfettamente in sintonia, posso dire con tutta onestà di volerle un mondo di bene, e di averla adottata come surrogato di sorella minore per sempre. È la persona più dolce del mondo, un'attrice di grande talento, e lavorare con lei è stata una una completa gioia.

Fantasmi, mostri nascosti nella nebbia, complotti governativi, Zombie. Cosa ti spaventa di più?

I fantasmi mi spaventano di più. Non mi piace il fatto di non poterli vedere, mentre loro possono sbattere le porte e muovere gli oggetti... che paura!

Have you ever read Robert Kirkman's comic book from which the TV series originates? If so, was it useful to enter in Andrea's character?

Prior to landing the role of Andrea on "The Walking Dead" television series, I was not familiar with the graphic novel. However, once I got the part, I picked up Compendium One and read it cover to cover. I was simply blown away. I was captivated by Robert Kirkman's incredible storytelling and by all of these amazing, complex, and diverse characters.

In regards to preparing for the role of "Andrea", I found reading the graphic very useful. But I was sure not to read too far ahead because I didn't want to get too ahead of myself.

In your opinion what are Andrea's main traits? And what are the ones you focused on most to play her role at your best?

Andrea is a gal that prior to the zombie apocalypse, was a Human Rights lawyer. She had dedicated her life to defending, protecting, and restoring the rights of others. To me, this is the KEY to who she is as a person. In this new chaotic world, there are of course no courtrooms, but she continues to fight against injustice. She has a strong moral compass and is impassioned to help others. She is a natural born leader ...a survivor, and a good person.

It's not the first time you work under Frank Darabont's direction. Having worked with him in two movies and one tv series, what do you think are the difference between Darabont as movie director and Darabont as tv series director (if you think there are)?

This is my third collaboration with Frank Darabont. He directed me in two previous films: The Majestic and The Mist. ..which were both, incredibly rewarding and positive experiences. This experience was no different, in that he is an auteur who pays incredible attention to detail and honors story above all else. Working on "The Walking Dead" (though it is television), felt like shooting a feature film because the production value was excellent, the scripts were sensational, the cast and crew were top notch... and with Mr. Darabont at the helm... we were able to do our do something innovative and ground breaking-ly creative. I feel truly incredibly blessed to be a part of this show.

Once again you found yourself working together with Jeffrey DeMunn, who plays the role of Dale, in The Walking Dead. How has it been finding yourselves together again?

I have worked with Jeff DeMunn twice before...on "The Majestic" and "The Mist" respectively. He is one of the finest actors I have ever had the pleasure of working with and is hands down, one of the best men I know. I love working with Jeff!

Do you think that having worked together in the past could have provided incentives to the director while he chose you two for your roles (also considering the relationship even more tight between Andrea and Dale in the original story)?

Some of the actors have a joke going around that we are part of the "Frank Darabont troupe of players". That is because has a tendency to hire the same actors over and over again. If you watch his films you will often see many familiar faces. Jeff DeMunn has been in every single production Frank Darabont has ever directed... and Melissa McBride (who plays Carol in the show), was in "The Mist " as well. He also likes to work with the same crew..and many people on the set are old chums from when he went to high school. I feel enormously grateful to be a part of such a great group of creative people... and when I walk on set for any of his projects it feels like home... there's a real sense of family.
I do know that from the moment "The Walking Dead" got green lit, he had me in mind for "Andrea" and Jeff in mind for "Dale". Because he has worked with us before and knows us both so well, the chemistry was picture perfect.

X-Files is a tv series that entered the fan's hearts, do you think that The Walking Dead will do the same? If so, why do you think it will?   

I think "The Walking Dead" will appeal to audiences because of the characters: they are so complicated, rich, diverse and textured. We are also committed to telling the most dramatically real and authentic stories possible. It's dark, it's scary, at times inspiring ...yet wildly entertaining at the same time. The viewers are in for one heck of a ride and I think they are going to love it.

Mary Travis, Marita Covarrubias, Cybil Bennet, Olivia Murray are all determined characters with a strong personality. Now we may also add to that list the character of Andrea. On an interpretative plan, what makes these characters different one from the other? Which of them you feel more linked to? How do you feel playing the role of these, if we could say so, "die hard women"? Are these roles that someway resemble your nature?

I dont' know if I would classify the roles I have played as "die hard " women, as much as strong, determined women. Take Mary Travis for instance. She was a frontier woman who was a survivor. She fought to make a life for herself and her son in the Old West after the death of her husband. What was intriguing about her, was that she was a self-made woman... a newspaper editor, in an era when women were not  entirely liberated. Marita Covarrubias, similiarly, was a woman who was given tremendous responsibility in a male dominated "governmental" world. As Special Representative to the U.N., the future of the world often rested on her shoulders (by the decisions she had to make/secrets she needed to  harbor). I loved playing such a mysterious character with such high risks at stake. Olivia Murray was also a character I  enjoyed playing because again, she was a woman (an I.C.E. agent ), in a dog eat dog male dominated "drug cartel world". She was authoritative and took no prisoners... but also had a real vulnerability to her that made the character so interesting to play. Cybil Bennet was just flat out iconic. How often do you get to play a video game super hero? That was a blast.
Andrea is different from all of these characters in that she is just a gal trying to figure things out. When the apocalypse happens, all she cares about is keeping it together and protecting her family. She is not a superhero, a warrior, or any kind of authoritative person... AT ALL. All of those leadership skills emerge over time... as the character evolves... throughout the course of the series. Andrea has an amazing character arc.

The Magnificent Seven last for two seasons, X-files for nine, The Shield for seven... How much will The Walking Dead last?

I hope The Walking Dead lasts forever.

Emma Bell plays the role of Amy, your sister. How a bigger sister has to be protective in a world populated by living deads? Can you talk to us about your relationship inside and outside the set?

I was truly blessed the day they cast Emma Bell in the role of "Amy". We bonded considerably over the course of shooting and are now  thick as thieves, I can honestly say "I love that girl to bits", and have adopted her as my surrogate little sis for life. She is just the sweetest person in the whole wide world, an incredibly talented actress, and working with her was a complete and utter joy.

Ghosts, creatures hidden in the mist, governative's plots, zombies? What scares you the most?

Ghosts scare me the most. I don't like that you can't see them and they are able to slam doors and move things... SCARY!
